Start of Cross Country Season

Cross Country is a sport in which athletes race on an open terrain course which may include grass, cement, gravel, and hills. The High School ladies run a 2 mile course (3200 meters) while the High School men run a 5 kilometer course (3.1 miles). Middle school runners run from 1.5 mile to 2 mile races.

Races are started en masse with a gun or horn sounding, then runners converge from the starting line into a narrow path that is followed until the finish. Each runner is responsible for staying on the path, and the course ends at a finish line with a chute. The chute is a walkway that keeps athletes single-file in order of finishing.

Points are awarded to the individual runners of eligible teams, equal to the position in which they cross the finish line (first place gets 1 point, second place gets 2 points, etc). Teams are considered ineligible to score if they have fewer than the five. Only the first five runners in for a team are counted towards that team's score; the points for these runners are summed, and the teams are ranked based on the total, with lowest being best. In the event of a tie, the winner is decided by whose sixth runner, the first one whose score does not count, finished first.

Practice has already started, but you are more than welcome to join us. Both the Middle School and High School team runs at the school on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 am, and also runs at Spotts Park at 7:10 am on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays with a group called Wills Hills till August 15th. We will then be running at the school until the season is over which is the last weekend in October. Once school starts, practices will be after school.
